Excellent foresight and some really good food for thought for programmers out there padding their resume with "work experience".
It just goes to show that if you don’t take control of your own boat, you’ll find yourself at the mercy of the winds and storms of life.

Vinayak,
Thank you for your response. Remember that you didn't have to take giant steps to reach your goal. You can start small and progressively increase your commitment. Make a promise to yourself that you can keep and KEEP IT. That is the easiest thing you can do to increase your self-esteem.
Send me a mail - link below my photo and we will take it from there.
Best,
Raj
PS: My book covers some aspects of what you are looking for but not everything. Hopefully you will get some time to look at the "Distinguish yourself" series on this blog. It has 156 articles so far - extending the concepts in the book.

Great post. Thanks for sharing your ideas on 'work experience'.
If I reflect this on myself, I know I do have a goal, I am also figuring out that I am not doing enough to get to that goal, neither have a clue how to do it in the best possibly manner. To top it all I do not have a mentor. I am trying to find out if your book is helping me in any of this. I am half way through it.
Thanks.

Excellent post!
I am tired of looking at experienced technical resumes because resumes (of software engineers) have similar sounding buzzwords!
You nailed the point - what is the differntiator other than these buzzwords you accumulate over the years?

Superb article.
I for one unfortunately belong to the group of people who do not have an aim knowing very well that it is not good for you. I have absolutely no idea of how to change myself :-(
How do I find my motivation factor? I have no clue.
