Hi Michael,
Your questions have several parts and all of them are good. Let me try to share my thoughts on each one of the points that you have raised since all are important
1. Filtering for new relationships
Statistically, it is impossible to have all of your relationships to be RIGHT. One reason is that there are so many reasons why you will engage with someone. Example would be to fulfill an obligation to someone who is close to you. If it means a lot to them that you help someone out, probably you will.
Although we are talking about "filtering" I guess the bigger problem is the "quitting" once you realize that it was not the right relationship. Just like we hang on to a stock way longer than we should, we might hang on to a relationship longer than we should.
2. Should we engage with someone who is not on an up?
Great question. Immediate answer would be NO. But that would sound brutal, isn't it? My thought is that you should always have a few relationships with people who are just "good" and "honest" people who may not be on an up NOW but have the potential to move up. These are the people who won't get enough support as currently all they have is "potential" and no "track record." You can make a big impact in their lives.
Actually, you are already doing it in your life extremely well spending time with lots and lots of students some of whom may become superstars tomorow.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Rajesh

Hey Rajesh,
Nice quote. How do you filter the people you meet?
I agree with the quote, but on the other hand, time is limited, and so it the number of people you can build relationships with.
I will always be there for my close friends no matter what, but does it make sense to make new friends and contacts with people who are not on an up?
I would be interested in your thoughts.
