Thanks for the note Cleon. You took the example literally - feedback for me is that I should explain this more clearly.

Obviously the fisherman does not have to go EXACTLY on the path shown by the Harvard MBA. He can simply change a bit of his lifestyle to ensure that he takes care of his future in some way.

A few other points:
1. Misfortune can happen to everyone but the one who is more prepared will face the misfortunes better.

2. Nobody in the deathbed wish they spent more time at work. Nobody in the deathbed also won't wish that they contributed nothing to the world. So it's all subjective. You could just be a free rider or you could make your life meaningful to others.

3. Yes, the fisherman was ALREADY living his ideal lifestyle - it worked for that day. That in no way means that he can continue to live that way without changing his lifestyle or praying for a miracle.

Best,
Raj

I'm sorry but you are wrong.
The story was not talking only about the destination but the journey of life different ones take.
You fail to realise that what the MBA proposed was going to take at least 10-12 years (which everything would have had to have happened just right with a great deal of luck to turn a humble fisherman into a Huge Enterprise as suggested in the story) of extreamly hard hard work until the Fisherman could as he wished. The point was the Fisherman was ALREADY doing as he Wished.

As for your twist. It goes both ways. Misfortune can can strike people trying to build huge Enterprises as well difference is if it happened with in the 10-12 years he could end in a lot worse situation then when he started.

A lot can happen in 10-12 years. for one thing his chilren would have grown up and he would have missed it if he chose to follow the MBA. The fisherman no matter how much money he had could he buy that back.

I've never herd anyone on there death bed wish the spent more time at work. yet I HAVE herd the wish to have spent more time with the family.

Just my two cents.

Indeed correct. Two very different destinations.
The problems I had with the story were twofold.
1) Where does the fisherman find money for drinks in the evening?
and
2) after 12 plus years building an empire his children would have grown up. Playing with adolescents who have grown up barely knowing their errant businessman father is probably not such an appealing prospect.
Logic is as logic does.

This Life Beyond Code :: Powerful story telling challenge: Harvard MBA and the fisherman is the scenario, the answer is then given by Rajesh in Life Beyond Code :: MBA and the Fisherman solution BUT
